Ulupalakua Vineyards, Maui’s Winery
It’s a different world up at the Ulupalakua Vinyards, a place steeped in history and cherished by Maui’s families for decades. It’s an escape from the heat and bustle, a chance to slow down, soak up the scenery, breathe the air and taste the wine, even pick up a one-of-a-kind gift for loved ones back home. The atmosphere is inviting, and the attitude: unmistakably serene.
Just past the tiny town of Keokea, take your time on a peaceful road that rambles and rolls over green hills, offering views down country to the ocean below. The verdant pastures of grazing cattle are a visual reminder of Ulupalakua Ranch owners’ commitment to preserving open space on Maui. In the springtime, stunning jacaranda trees add purple blossoms to the postcard setting, which have been the source of inspiration to painters and photographers alike.
Visitors are invited to follow in the footsteps of ali‘i (royalty) and paniolo (cowboys) on a walking tour of the grounds, narrated with aloha by the winery staff. On the tour, you will learn about the winemaking process and how some of the original lava-rock buildings are now being used as winemaking facilities. You’ll see many majestic trees, like the enormous Queensland kauri pine and the state’s largest camphor tree with its aromatic leaves. Their gracious staff carries on the long tradition of hospitality by welcoming visitors into the King’s Cottage Tasting Room from near and far alike. At the 18-foot-long bar made from a single mango tree, you may enjoy tastings from a selection of their pineapple wines – made from locally grown and hand-picked Maui pineapples – and our grape and sparkling wines.
Across the street, the Ulupalakua Ranch Store offers a tempting array of lunch fare featuring fresh Maui Cattle Company beef and famous Ulupalakua elk burgers.
