Hilo Hattie
You may hear a bell ring and someone yelling “Alooooha!” when you enter the Hilo Hattie shop in Lahaina as another fortunate customer finds a pearl in an oyster. I once saw an oyster containing two pink pearls. You can leave the pearl “as-is” or have it set in a ring, and take a shiny piece of the islands home with you. Grandparents can browse the keiki (kids) area and look over Hawaiian children’s books and toys while holding a half dozen kukui nut leis for the little ones back home. Just promise to bring them to the islands in the years to come.
With resort wear, sarongs and sandals in one area, a fine jewelry section in the center and Hawaiian gifts mixed in all over, you’re sure to find something for everyone back home. Gourmet treats like Kona Coffee and macadamia nut cookies are always a big hit—nothing like sharing the aroma and flavor of Kona roasted coffee with friends and neighbors back home. There’s even a section with matching aloha outfits for taking a special paradise photo on the beach at sunset.
“Hilo Hattie,” Clarissa Haila opened her first store in Kauai in 1963, and has grown to a chain of seven stores across the Hawaiian Islands. Success from “The Store of Hawaii” comes from their employees who are dedicated to providing everyone who walks in the door with a sense of aloha.
